The Sound of Music

Passion for percussion led Soumya towards creating a huge collection of instruments.

In tune with the times

Soumya’s famous a capella cover song “Thumbapookatil” was a runaway hit on YouTube and went viral in no time. It was this song that catapulted her to instant popularity and made her presence known among music lovers. A capella is a genre that uses no instruments other than vocal ones. Musicians use voices, claps, taps, snaps or harmonizing to create music. Though it’s a very famous genre, it has not gained much popularity among Indian music lovers. Aala Wardi, an Iranian musician, who recreated an a capella version of the famous song “Pehla Nasha was Soumya’s inspiration for this endeavor. Her sensitivity towards even slight variations in tones, pitches and her inclination towards percussion paid off in making this project a huge success. Recording and editing the video was no easy task as Soumya not only sings but also provides the background music, making this venture a unique one.

Touching a soft chord

A sensitive heart coupled with experience in clinical psychology has stood her in good stead for being of service to those who are suffering from ailments. Soumya renders voluntary service at Pallium India and does other charity works too. She believes in serving people as much as she can.

On a song

Soumya has created a space for herself in the music world and is proving that she is here to stay for a long time with her manifold talents. Recently, she sang in the movie Dhanayathra for musician Rajamani. She also teamed up with P Preetha, the famous South Indian playback singer and other musicians to create yet another viral hit, an acapella version of “Vande Matharam”. Many famous musicians and eminent personalities conveyed their appreciation towards this work through social media. She is much thankful to singer Preetha for acknowledging her talents and enabling her to showcase it the way it deserves to be known. Her stage shows with eminent singers and musicians are a great crowd puller.

Striking the right notes

Soumya takes much delight in learning more and so continues to quench her thirst for knowledge under gurus like Joboy Master, Satheesh Babu, Binu John etc. As a music composer herself, she is always ooking for opportunities to make music. She has brought to life the lyrics of legendary lyricists like Sreekumaran Thampy, Poovachal Khader, Mankompu Gopalakrishnan, K.Jayakumar and Rafeek Ahmed. Soumya also got the opportunity to compose for the mini choir which was revived after 20 years. Accomplishing all this has not put off her drive for learning or find time to pursue other hobbies. A foodie who loves to take on the four wheels to go on long drives, there is no end to the journey for fulfilling her dreams and aspirations. The studio attached to her home inspires her with new challenges and boundaries as she aims for the skies.
